Freeze and thaw is one of the mechanical weathering process that usually takes place in a colder type of environment. When the rocks in this region are comprised of fractures, then the water seeps into these fractures and at night due to the lowering of temperature, the water in these fractures gets freeze. Due to this freezing, the water expands and exerts a force on the side of these fractures that breaks the rock apart. This type of weathering process is known as the freeze and thaw method.
