Following factors distinguishing living things from nonliving things:
1- Living things can reproduce, while non-livings can not reproduce.
2- Living things show growth, while non-livings can not.
3- Living things can respire, while non-livings can not.
4- Living things can excrete, while non-livings can not.
5- Living things can show movement/response to stimulus, while non-livings can not.

Cell is the basic unit of life. For a thing to be considered as a living thing it must possess at least a cell. The cell is the is basic unit of a living organism and all the biochemical activities that the cell need to maintain live is carried out inside the cell. On the contrary, non living things do not possess cells.
For a living thing to remain alive, it must continue to carry out biochemical processes that maintain life. Most of these biochemical processes require water in order to occur, thus a living organism has to take in sufficient water in order to stay alive.
Prokaryotes refers to those living organisms who do not possess a true nucleus and which lack membrane bound organelles in their cells. Prokaryotic cells are not well defined. Bacteria are a large group of unicellular micro organism and their cells is prokaryotic in nature.
The cell theory took years; close to 200 years to be developed and it involved the inputs of many scientists all over the world. Robert Hook was the first scientist to discover the cell, this was made possible by the help of a microscope. The cell theory continue to develop long after Robert Hook is dead.
