The African Americans most important institution was the church. The church was the center of the community. During civil war it was the place of refuge for them which served as schools and orphanages too.
The Afro Americans were not let to be worshiped in the church among the whites. So the Afro Americans formed a church predominantly for them. This was called as the Black church which was the strengthening factor and support during the civil war.The basic values and their culture stayed alive through the church which acted as a social institution.
