John Marshall was a lawyer and was appointed the fourth chief of justice in 1801, he remained at this position till 1835, he is considered one of the most influential chief of justice, he was the one that created the principle of the judicial review where the supreme court can over rule an article or a sentence given by a state or local court if it goes agains the federal constitution. He also ruled the sentence on the McCulloch v. Maryland, and forbid the states to tax the federal banks or other institutions.
