We subtract 6 from both sides to go from the original equation to -3x-6 = y
Then we flip both sides to end up with y = -3x-6
This is in slope intercept form y = mx+b with m = -3 as the slope and b = -6 as the y intercept.

The equation y = x^2 - 1 is known as a quadratic since the largest exponent here is 2. This equation cannot be written in slope intercept form y = mx+b, so that's why it's not linear. You can also graph y = x^2-1 to get a curved parabola. The graph must be a straight line if you want a linear equation.
